Chalmers Solar Team
Racing the Future
Chalmers Solar Team was founded in Göteborg, Sweden in 2018 in order to encourage students to work with environmental and sustainable technology. The project will also provide a unique opportunity to develop real-life experiences in business and engineering which the students can use to grow as individuals, professionals, and as engineering students. It all started with a course in product development at the Chalmers University of Technology. Now, Chalmers Solar Team is a nonprofit project where 45 students design, build and race a solar-powered car worldwide with the help of sponsors like SUNBEAMsystem.
The team‘s car is built on a steel frame with a body made of flax fiber, which makes it unique among the competitors‘ cars, which are mostly made of carbon fiber. The solar cells on the car have a capacity of 800 watts. In 2021, the team competed in the Solar Challenge Morocco. The race was an adventure, with the team spending some nights sleeping on blankets outdoors in the desert. The car stopped at one point due to a loose electrical connection, but the team was able to fix the problem and finish the race. Chalmers placed sixth in the competition.
Since 2020 SUNBEAMsysteam are proud to be sponsoring the Chalmers Solar Team, providing them with custom Tough++ Race solar panels. The Tough++ Race Series features a never before seen power–to–weight ratio, without compromising the durability of the panel. Together, Chalmers Solar Team and SUNBEAMsystem hope to make a difference in the world of environmental and sustainable technology.
